Is This IP Address

a VPN?

You are on Facebook and receive a message from someone who is inquiring about an item you have on the Facebook Marketplace. Suspicious dialogue make you wonder: “Is this person a scammer?”. “How do I know?”. You send them a grabify link to nab their IP address. They click on it and grabify shows the IP address may be a VPN. To find out, you visit a website where you can paste the IP address to scan and see if it is a VPN. It is confirmed. The person behind that Facebook message is in fact using a VPN.

There are many websites that can provide you with this information, but this one is our favorite. When the IP address is scanned, it will show results for city, region, country. internet service provider, and whether they are using a VPN, proxy, or TOR. These results will be shown as either “True” or “False”.

VPN’s are not always reliable as some providers may suffer poor connections, server issues, and in some cases, firewall/antivirus interference. VPN’s (virtual private network) are used to help encrypt data traffic when online and to mask your original IP address.

Always ensure you do your research before choosing a VPN provider. Especially when using a public Wi-Fi.
