WHAT IS MALWARE?

Short for malicious software, malware refers to any program or file that is intentionally designed to harm a computer, networks, server, or user.

There are many types of malware that exists. Scroll down to see the different types of malware and what it does.

TROJAN

A type of malware that disguises itself as a legitimate program to gain access to a user's device. Trojans are often spread through social engineering tactics, such as phishing attacks.

WORMS

A worm is a type of malware that spreads rapidly by replicating itself across a network and can perform malicious actions. Worms can consume bandwidth, overload systems, and delete or change files.

CRYPTOJACKING

Cryptojacking is also referred to as malicious crypto-mining, and it is a threat that embeds itself within a computer or mobile device and then uses its resources to mine cryptocurrency. Cryptojacking essentially gives the attacker free money—at the expense of your device and the overall health of your network.

KEYLOGGERS

Keystroke loggers, or keyloggers, are malware that covertly monitors and records the keystrokes typed on a specific computer’s keyboard or smartphone. The program then sends the information to its owner, who can view whatever has been typed. Although there are some legitimate uses of keyloggers (tracking technology misuse at work, for example) most keyloggers are used to divulge information like payment details and passwords.

ROOTKIT

A rootkit is a type of malware that allows cybercriminals to gain access to a computer and remain hidden. Rootkits can be difficult to detect and remove, and can severely impact a computer's performance and put personal data at risk.

BACKDOOR MALWARE

Backdoor malware is a type of malware that gives cybercriminals remote access to a system by bypassing security measures. Backdoors can be installed in software, hardware, or mobile apps.

MALVERTISING

Malvertising is a type of cyberattack that uses online ads to spread malware. Malicious code is injected into ads, which can then appear on legitimate websites without the owners' knowledge.

RANSOMWARE

Ransomware is a type of malware which prevents you from accessing your device and the data stored on it, usually by encrypting your files. A criminal group will then demand a ransom in exchange for decryption. The computer itself may become locked, or the data on it might be encrypted, stolen or deleted.

SPYWARE

Spyware is a type of malware that secretly gathers information about a person or device and sends it to another party. Spyware can be installed on a device without the user's knowledge.

ADWARE

Adware is unwanted software that displays advertisements on your device, often without your consent. It can appear as pop-ups, banners, or in-browser ads. Adware can also collect information about your browsing habits and online behavior.

SQL INJECTION

SQL injection, also known as insertion, is a malicious technique that exploits vulnerabilities in a target website's SQL-based application software by injecting malicious SQL statements or by exploiting incorrect input.

BROWSER HIJACKING

Hijackware is malware that infects a web browser that takes control of a browser’s settings to redirect the user to websites or advertisements. Hijackware can also change a user’s homepage or install new toolbars in the browser.

THIS IS JUST A FEW TYPES AS THERE ARE MANY OTHER FORMS OF MALWARE THAT EXISTS.
