Ransomware is a type of cyber-attack wherein malicious users access the victims' documents/device and deny them access to their files by encrypting the material. The hackers may then demand payment in order to decrypt the files and return access to the user.

In a ransomware attack, paying the ransom does not guarantee that attackers will provide the decryption key. Even with the key, most organizations are unable to recover all their data with decryption alone.
