THE REFUND SCAM

A refund scam is a type of fraud where a scammer claims to have sent too much money and asks the victim to return the difference. The goal is to trick the victim into giving the scammer money they are not entitled to.

One of the main deceptions of the refund scam is the scammer editing the html coding. This is done by selecting the Inspect Element option on the website by right clicking on the screen.

But first, the scammer will request remote access to your computer. Using remote access tools such as AnyDesk or TeamViewer, the scammer will have you download these programs and then request to connect to you by receiving the remote connection ID on your end.

Once connected, the scammer will request you to login to your bank account. They will reassure you that they cannot see your login details, but they can see everything you do. Once logged in, the scammer will “process” the refund by blacking out the screen. They will tell you that their servers are processing the refund, but in reality, they are editing the html coding on your bank account, making it look like you received a deposit, but there is no deposit.

Sometimes, if there are large amounts of money in another account, they will just transfer the money into your checking from your savings, or to another account, then edit the html to hide those changes, and then show your screen.

This is where the scammer will say there was a mistake and request the difference be sent to them.
